Foundational Calligraphy with Aline Chan (February 15th, 2025)

$75.00

Dive into the beautiful world of classical calligraphy in this 3-hour, in-person workshop with professional calligrapher Aline Chan!

The Foundational hand is an alphabet developed during the 10th-century based on the Roman alphabet and was commonly used in English manuscripts. Based on the circular “o,” it is the perfect training hand for beginners to calligraphy, and is often called the manuscript hand as it was frequently used in Medieval illuminated manuscripts. Its revival in the modern era is accredited to the English scribe, Edward Johnston, in the late 19th-Century. As well as being a beautiful, readable hand, it provides a great foundation for tackling more advanced letterforms.

Aline will show you the rudimentary skills necessary for this traditional block hand, and guide you through the process of writing out each letter of the alphabet. Whether you are looking to create elegant event invitations or unique greeting cards, this course will give you the skills to begin your exploration of the elegant art of calligraphy.
