Begin your exploration of Uncial calligraphy in this 3-hour, in-person workshop with professional calligrapher Aline Chan!
Uncial calligraphy is characterized by broad, single-stroke, uppercase letters that take on a simple round form. The Uncial majuscule evolved from Ancient Roman capitals around the 3rd century AD, and was commonly used by Latin and Greek scribes in the subsequent centuries. It can be found in many manuscripts dating from the 4th to 8th centuries AD, and is most easily recognized as the script used in the ancient Book of Kells. In the modern era, it was re-popularized thanks to its use in the Lord of the Rings cinema franchise.
This workshop with Aline will focus on the basic geometry and techniques of Uncial majuscule, giving you the necessary skills to get started on your own practice of this beautiful calligraphy style.
